Love it so far - be sure it oil it!
Received this beautiful block as a Christmas gift, and am in love! It's so substantial looking, and the added 3" height is nice since it elevates food off the counter-top (I am nearly 6' tall with my heels on), so there isn't so much bending over to chop. The cherry wood is pretty soft and kind to my knife edges. A dull soft "thud" when the blade makes contact is all I hear. No jarring felt into the knife handle, so I know the blade is much more cushioned than on my edge grain boards.
Although it was oiled when it arrived, I've oiled it much more. Due to its sheer size I've already put 8 oz of mineral oil into it and it is still absorbing more oil! It's super important to oil these end grain blocks because if water gets into the joints, they can swell and eventually cause the board to split at the seams.
