Not like the old Hobart made ones, but still great
I love my Pro 500. I use it to make pizza dough at least twice a week, plus whatever other baking we do. Never a problem. Grinds a little and makes noises that my old Hobart-built Kitchenaid never made, but that's what you get when current owner Whirlpool rides on the old reputation instead of maintaining it.
No new Whirlpool-built KitchenAid mixer will ever have the quality or anywhere near the lifespan of the old Hobart-built ones. That's a fact. But they are still the best for the money especially if you are too smart to pay retail.
As far as "plastic" gears go, this has been done in Kitchenaid mixers for many decades. It has nothing to do with being cheap. There is only ONE non-metal gear, it is nylon, not plastic. Its designed purpose is to strip out and fail instead of allowing whatever the problem is to bind the motor and ruin it.
